South Africa: Consumer Protection

On 13 August 2025, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition published the draft National Credit Act Amendment Regulations in the Government Gazette, proposing amendments to various Regulations under the National Credit Act 34 of 2005 (NCA), including Regulations 18,19 and 23A.

Studying "in outside countries" as Ugandans call it, is much the dream of many young minds, but available only to the privileged few who can afford it or the lucky recipient of a a scholarship.

For more than a decade, South African gift cards have existed largely within the consumer-protection space. Section 63 of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 ("CPA") treats a gift card as a "pre-paid certificate, card, credit, voucher or similar device" issued by a supplier that undertakes to provide goods or services up to the stored value.
