In November last year, it was reported that Ghana officially registered its Kente fabric as a geographical indication.
Now the country has published its first geographical indications journal (dated 5 May 2025) in March 2026. The publication of the journal is pursuant to the Geographical Indications Act, 2003 (Act 659), as well as the Geographical Indications Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2414).
For the first time, it will be possible to oppose the geographical indications through the Registrar of Geographical Indications, housed at the Registrar-General’s Department in Accra, Ghana. Notably, the historic journal only contains two geographical indications, namely PROSECCO, filed by the provinces of Belluno, Gorizia, Padua, Pordenone, Treviso, Trieste, Udine, Venice and Vicenza in Italy, as well as KENTE filed by the communities of Adahomase and Bonwire in the Ashanti region and Agortime-Kpetoe, Tafi and Agbozume in the Volta region of Ghana.
