Marshall Gerstein Partner Ryan Phelan was interviewed by Law.com as we look forward to his participation in ALM’s Legalweek, happening later this month in New York. Ryan sat down with Law.com’s Benjamin Joyner to share more about how courts and jurisdictions are handling novel technologies, the copyrightability of AI-assisted art, and other emerging topics related to generative AI.
Ryan told the publication, “I hope people get excited about the future and less fearful about AI. AI is a tool. I don't think it's going to replace anybody in the legal space. Certainly I think it could make jobs easier by helping write things, but critical thinking, the tool just doesn't do it. These tools, at least in the LLM space, operate by trying to figure out what word to put behind the next, and that's a poor substitute for the rational, analytical mind that attorneys typically employ on a day to day basis. So I'm hoping that people can take that away and just be positive about the future.”
Ryan’s Legalweek sections include “The State of AI in the Legal Industry” and “Transforming Intellectual Property Workflows and Shaping IP Strategy.” He will also participate in a use case roundup.
