Howie, Sacks & Henry alongside co-counsel at Headwaters LLP and Phillips Barristers are representing Pikangikum First Nation in a landmark $2 billion lawsuit (seeking $200 million in emergency relief) against the Government of Canada, as the community declares a state of emergency over a decades-long water crisis.

The case, filed in Federal Court, seeks immediate relief and long-term investment in water, sewage, and fire infrastructure for the northern Ontario community. Despite numerous warnings and assessments over the years, the federal government has failed to deliver essential services, leaving over 4,000 residents without reliable access to clean drinking water or adequate sanitation.

"Canada has repeatedly made promises but failed to act," said Chief Paddy Peters. "Our people are at risk every day, and we can no longer wait."

The legal claim details systemic negligence, outlining how deteriorating wastewater systems are contaminating local water sources and threatening the health and safety of residents. The community has been forced to implement emergency water conservation protocols and fears the potential closure of essential facilities, including its school.
