London, 9 September 2024: Global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) has appointed expert witness and investigator Colin Johnson as a Managing Director in its Disputes & Investigations (DI) practice.
Based in London, Mr Johnson specialises in expert testimony for complex disputes; the development, operation and financing of large and complex infrastructure, especially in the energy sector; forensic analysis and valuations; and public-private partnerships. He supports clients across industries, including oil and gas, power, construction, infrastructure, mining, real estate, tourism, shipping and transportation, and telecommunications.
The senior appointment brings more than 30 years of experience to A&M's growing DI practice. Having worked on matters in over 100 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, Mr Johnson has:
- Acted as both a quantum and financing testifying expert witness for commercial and investment treaty matters;
- Served as a party-appointed and tribunal-appointed expert on more than 50 cases; and
- Provided oral evidence in more than 30 hearings for over $70 billion in claims.

Mr Johnson was most recently a partner at risk consultancy HKA, where he led Forensic Accounting and Commercial Damages in EMEA. He led Grant Thornton UK's energy community and Grant Thornton's international arbitration business, has been a member of UKTI's PPP Export Advisory Group and served as head of City UK's Brazil and Latin America groups. Before becoming an expert witness, he acted as a lender, equity provider, investment manager, legal and financial adviser and project developer.
Mr Johnson is a Fellow Chartered Certified Accountant (FCCA), a Member of the Energy Institute, and serves as the Chair of the Energy Arbitration Club. With an MBA from the University of Warwick, a diploma in international communication (Spanish) from the Institute of Linguists and a law degree from Nottingham University, he is fluent in English and Spanish, with knowledge of Portuguese, French and German to differing degrees.
