Canada Employment and HR

On June 20, 2018, the federal government announced that Canadians will be able to possess and consume cannabis recreationally under the Cannabis Act as of October 17, 2018. Until that date, cannabis possession and consumption remains illegal, other than for medical purposes in accordance with the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations.

Employers have 17 weeks to ensure they are prepared for the potential impact of legal cannabis on their workplaces. Employers should ensure they are prepared in advance of October 17th, including undertaking a review of their drug and alcohol policies to ensure they address legal recreational cannabis and prohibit impairment in the workplace.

Save the date! Field Law has developed a comprehensive workshop to assist employers in preparing for the legislation, which we plan to hold in Edmonton on September 11th and Calgary on September 19th. Stay tuned for your invitation, which will be sent out this summer! We can also tailor the workshop to suit the needs of your organization and present the information to your team at your offices.
