Ballard Spahr lawyers advised The Philadelphia Citizen on its purchase of the 117-year-old regional publication Philadelphia Magazine, managing the transaction from negotiation through closing. Gregory L. Seltzer, a Mergers and Acquisitions partner who founded the firm’s nationally recognized Emerging Companies and Venture Capital Group, led the deal, along with Christopher A. Jones, partner and practice group leader of the firm’s Tax Group, and Business and Transactions attorneys Jessica Laderman Origlio, Harry A. Levin, and Katelyn M. Bradley.
With this acquisition, The Philadelphia Citizen, a nonprofit digital news outlet founded in 2015, has launched Citizen Media Group, a new nonprofit umbrella organization for both publications. This transition ends more than 75 years of family ownership and signals an innovative new era for local media under unified nonprofit leadership.
Ballard Spahr Mergers and Acquisitions attorneys represent buyers and sellers of all sizes, ranging from small, privately held companies to multinational public companies and private equity funds in transactions that span the lower-middle and middle markets to multi-billion-dollar mergers.
