Prime Minister Justin Trudeau extended a ban on flights from the United Kingdom this week – only days before the traditionally-heavy holiday travel season - in a bid to stop a new variant of Covid-19 from making its way to Canada.

"To prevent the new variant of Covid-19 from spreading in Canada, we're extending the temporary suspension of passenger flights from the UK for another two weeks, until Jan. 6," the Canadian prime minister tweeted two days before Christmas.

"We'll continue to monitor the situation and do whatever it takes to keep you safe," wrote Trudeau.

Canada imposed the ban on flights from the UK after a new form of coronavirus which has spawned the global pandemic was discovered there. The virulence of the new strain of the virus is as yet unknown but public safety officials in Canada are choosing to err on the side of caution.
