Canada: Consumer Protection

On June 12, 2026, Bill 10, titled the “Act to protect consumers against abusive practices related to ticket resale and online subscription renewals” (“Bill 10”), received assent. Through this reform, the Québec legislature has tightened the framework applicable to certain commercial practices, particularly with respect to online subscriptions, termination of contracts involving sequential performance, and ticket resale. Bill 10 amends, among other things, the Consumer Protection Act (“CPA”) and the Regulation respecting the application of the Consumer Protection Act (the “Regulation”).

British Columbia's consumer protection amendments take effect August 1, 2026, introducing significant changes to subscription contracts, direct sales restrictions, and disclosure requirements. Businesses must review their contracts and practices to ensure compliance with new cancellation rights, prohibited terms, and enhanced consumer protections.

Le 12 juin 2026, le projet de loi n° 10, intitulé « Loi protégeant les consommateurs contre les pratiques abusives de revente de billets et de renouvellement d’abonnements en ligne » (la « Loi 10 »), a été sanctionné. Par cette réforme, le législateur québécois resserre l’encadrement applicable à certaines pratiques commerciales, notamment en matière de renouvellement d’abonnements en ligne, de résiliation de contrats à exécution successive et de revente de billets de spectacle.
