The Maltese Government and telecommunications giant Huawei have signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Through this agreement aimed at researching and developing technologies in the company, Huawei will be able to start testing 5G technology across the island while in its turn the company will help Malta develop its digital strategy.

Through Huawei, Malta will be able to develop the possibility of nationwide fibre-to-home connectivity while expanding fib-rewire connectivity to other countries apart from Sicily. MGA Chairman Joseph Cuschieri, who is in charge of following the project, stated that this initiative will place Malta at the forefront since 5G is not as yet commercially available.

In addition, Huawei is interested in partnering with local companies and the possibility of further expansion in Malta is also not being excluded. Cuschieri said that the company, which will be operating from Smart City, may employ at least one Maltese person in a prominent leadership position. Such interest in Malta will surely create high quality employment and education opportunities in the future.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat stated that this venture shows that Malta is ready to head to new directions and partner with entities that can help the island move forward. Sai Mizzi Liang, the Maltese government's envoy to China in charge of sourcing investment opportunities for Malta stated that such a partnership enables Malta to strengthen its relationship with China.

This is highly advantageous for the island, particularly in view of China's strong economy, technology and tourism industry. She also affirmed her view that this collaboration will create employment and education opportunities in Malta while strengthening economic growth.

Huawei Italy CEO Edward Chan also made positive remarks about this venture. He stated that this will be a new experience both for the company and for the country. Through this initiative, the company will be able to research and develop new technology for Malta, in recognising what the country has to offer.
