Following their success in the Collas Crill Jersey Moot final, Beaulieu Convent School students Evie Simao and Evie Worth recently completed two weeks of paid work experience with our Jersey office.
The opportunity formed part of their prize after winning the Moot final, giving them valuable first-hand experience of working in a leading offshore law firm. During their placement, the students spent time with a range of practice groups, gaining an insight into different areas of law, developing practical legal skills and learning more about career pathways within the profession.
Throughout the two weeks, Evie and Evie worked alongside lawyers and business services teams, undertaking legal research, attending meetings and observing how different departments collaborate to support clients.
Reflecting on the experience, Evie Simao said, 'Meeting people from different legal backgrounds and hearing about their career journeys has been incredibly valuable. It was fascinating to learn about the firm's different practice areas, and the work experience has helped me better understand the route I would take if I decide to pursue a career in law.'
Evie also found the opportunity to carry out legal research particularly rewarding, explaining that taking part in the Collas Crill Moot had strengthened her communication, confidence and research skills, all of which proved invaluable during her placement.
One of the highlights of her experience was exploring a litigation matter that had attracted significant legal attention due to the use of artificial intelligence in court proceedings, demonstrating both the opportunities and challenges emerging technologies present for the legal profession.
For Evie Worth, spending time across different teams and attending court provided a memorable insight into life as a lawyer.
She said, 'Getting the opportunity to watch a litigation case in the Royal Court was truly inspiring. Seeing lawyers present their arguments in a real case showed me how the advocacy and preparation we developed through the Moot translate into practice.'
She added that the placement had strengthened her ambition to pursue a legal career after university, having gained a greater understanding of the different areas of law and the variety of work undertaken by legal professionals.
Both students encouraged other young people to take part in the Collas Crill Moot, highlighting the confidence, teamwork and communication skills it helps participants develop, regardless of whether they ultimately choose a career in law.
Evie Simao said, 'I'd encourage anyone considering the Moot to give it a go. Even if you're unsure, it's an experience that can open up new opportunities and help you develop skills that will benefit you in the future.'
Evie Worth added, 'The Moot pushes you out of your comfort zone in the best possible way. It gives you the chance to build confidence, develop practical skills and receive feedback from legal professionals. I would recommend it to anyone.'
