South Asian Heritage Month, observed annually from 18 July to 17 August, is a time for reflection, celebration and education, a moment to honour the diverse histories, cultures and contributions of South Asian communities in the UK and across the globe. First celebrated in 2020, the month has grown in significance each year, offering a platform to amplify South Asian voices and stories. The 2025 theme, ‘Routes to Roots’, invited us to explore the personal and collective journeys that connect individuals to their heritage, identity and ancestral legacies.
At Hunters, this year’s celebration took the form of a vibrant and meaningful event titled ‘Chai and Chat’, thoughtfully curated by members of the South Asian Heritage Month EDI subcommittee. The session brought colleagues together in a warm and welcoming space that blended education, storytelling and cultural appreciation. Through interactive Slido polls and a dynamic presentation, attendees were taken on a whistle-stop tour of South Asian arts, literature, fashion and cuisine - with team members sharing personal recommendations and reflections that added depth and authenticity to the experience.
A highlight of Chai and Chat was the KYC (Know Your Colleague) panel discussion, where South Asian colleagues of the committee shared heartfelt stories about their cultural identities. From the significance of their names and the challenges of navigating dual cultural expectations, to the joy of passing down traditions to future generations, the panel offered a powerful glimpse into the lived experiences of South Asian British individuals. These personal narratives not only deepened understanding but also fostered a sense of connection and empathy across the wider team.
In the spirit of inclusivity and celebration, a diverse spread of South Asian dishes was also offered, each accompanied by carefully curated name cards detailing the dish’s name, pronunciation, origin and cultural significance. This touch allowed everyone to engage with the cuisine in a meaningful way, encouraging curiosity and conversation around the stories behind the food.
The event was a true celebration of the vibrancy, resilience and richness of South Asian culture. It served as a reminder of the importance of recognising and valuing the contributions of all communities within our workplace.
