Sette Giugno, or the 7th of June, is a national holiday in Malta, commemorating a pivotal event in the country’s history. It marks the uprising of Maltese citizens against British colonial rule on June 7th, 1919. The unrest was sparked by economic hardship, high prices, and dissatisfaction with British governance. During the protests, which turned violent, Maltese demonstrators demanded political reforms and greater autonomy. Tragically, British troops opened fire on the protesters, resulting in several deaths and injuries.
