U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order specifying guidance for federal agencies' use of artificial intelligence ("AI") in government decision-making. The executive order authorizes the design, development, purchase, and use of AI technology while ensuring that its use does not violate the civil rights to privacy and freedom. The order instructs government agencies to conduct an analysis of the possible use of AI technology in each office and allow the White House to develop guidelines regarding such use.

The order emphasizes that the use of technology must be legal, for a specific purpose, accurate, reliable, efficient, and safe. Also, the technology must be clear and transparent and allow the decisions that would be made through it to be traced. The order also states that the use of such technology must be monitored frequently. While criticism of the use of artificial intelligence technology abounds, especially the use of facial recognition technology for law enforcement purposes, artificial intelligence technology is used by several government agencies for other purposes such as large-scale data processing and management and detection of trends for policymaking.
