Baltimore clients and guests heard from two leading healthcare authorities today on one of the most important issues facing the economy, the future of the Affordable Care Act. Womble Carlyle's Baltimore office hosted a discussion featuring Maryland Insurance Commissioner Al Redmer, Jr. and Dennis Schrader, Secretary of Maryland's Department of Health & Mental Hygiene as part of the office's monthly speaker series.
With a potential impact of $1.4 billion to Maryland next year if repealed, it isn't surprising that today's event was one of the most well attended this year.
"The goal of this speaker series is to bring people together from across the city to keep the dialogue going around these important public policy issues," said David Hamilton, Baltimore office managing partner. "We are thrilled so many of our friends were able to attend and we hope to see even more at our next thought-provoking discussion."
Redmer was appointed to office by Gov. Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. in January 2015 but previously served as commissioner from June 2003 until October 2005. A former member of the Maryland General Assembly, Commissioner Redmer most recently managed Redmer Insurance Group, LLC, and owned Redmer Financial Group. His business experience includes time as chief executive officer of Coventry Health Care of Delaware Inc. He is also currently the Chair of the National Association of Insurance Commissioner's (NAIC) Health & Managed Care Committee.
Schrader took office in December. He previously served as Secretary of Appointments in the Office of the Governor. A U.S. Navy veteran, Secretary Schrader's experience also includes serving as director of the governor's Office of Homeland Security.
