Harneys the BVI law firm is strengthening its Latin American Practice with the recruitment of Marco Martins. Martins has spent the last 5 years with Norton Rose in London and prior to that was with Shearman & Sterling in both California and London. Marco is Brazilian but qualified in England and New York. He will have responsibility for Harneys’ Latin American practice.
Martins’ experience includes a number of major Spanish and Portuguese privatizations, including Repsol, Endesa, Electricidade de Portugal, Iberia and Red Electrica de Espana, and he was involved in the privatization of YPF of Argentina and the renegotiation of Brazilian Government Bonds in the early 1990s.
Commenting on the appointment development partner Peter Tarn said "Latin American and Brazil in particular are key to our strategic objectives but have not previously received the investment they deserve. Marco's appointment is a huge step towards redressing that balance and we are actively seeking to build a team around him. We believe that language skills are not enough and to have found a lawyer of Marco's quality and experience who also has the cultural grounding to add value in those markets is very exciting".
