With the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum underway in South Korea, Canada's evolving relationship with China — and the trade tensions that have long shaped it — are back in focus.
In a recent interview with BNN Bloomberg, Jacques J.M. Shore, C.M., a partner in Gowling WLG's Government Affairs Group, joined broadcaster Lindsay Biscaia to weigh in on the significance of an anticipated meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Speaking on Canada's need to balance strategic diplomacy with economic opportunity, Shore emphasized the cautious approach required when engaging China, while also preserving the country's vital trade relationship with the United States.
"These are serious discussions which will take place. And I do think that, if we move the needle, it will probably be done cautiously and slowly — in a way that serves our interests, but at the same time carefully reflects on what we do with the United States."
