Foley Hoag again received a top "A" grade from Law Students for Climate Accountability (LSCA), a student-led organization that seeks to amplify the roles and responsibilities of the legal industry in our current climate crisis, on its 2025 Climate Scorecard. This marks the third consecutive year the firm earned a top ranking.
"This year once again sees the highest number of 'A' firms to date, with 14 firms making it into the category," LSCA noted in the scorecard. "Foley Hoag is a standout in this crowd; it has done mitigating work in both lobbying and litigation and is the first "A" firm to break into the top 5 mitigating firms in any category (Foley Hoag is 5th in mitigating litigation). Though "A" firms remain limited, their active renewables and climate mitigating work make them a legitimate choice for students interested in such work to consider."
The scorecard, published annually, ranks "Vault 100" law firms according to how much fossil fuel work they have engaged in. It was designed to draw awareness to the role law firms play in creating, implementing, and safeguarding fossil fuel projects. Grades are based on firms' litigation, transactional, and lobbying efforts. Each firm receives an overall Climate Score that reflects its contribution to the climate crisis, based on the data in the three categories.
"While the political landscape may shift, our commitment is ongoing," said Mark Barnett, Co-Chair of Foley Hoag's Energy & Climate Group. "For more than two decades, we've provided mission-driven counsel and strategic guidance to clients leading the clean energy transition. We're honored to support a diverse and growing network of companies, investors, and ecosystem partners working to advance both economic progress and environmental sustainability."
Last year, Foley Hoag provided more than $5 million in pro bono support in the sustainability space, to clients such as Ceres, Inc. and BioLite, and also advised the Open Society Justice Initiative on matters before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and the International Court of Justice. The firm is also a member of the Net Zero Lawyers Alliance, Stanford Law School Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy Initiative ("LSE") and is featured in the 2024 LSE Annual Report.
