Foley Hoag has been once again ranked among the top firms by
Global Arbitration Review in the 2025 GAR 30, its annual guide to
the world's leading 30 specialist international arbitration
practices, rising to 19th place. The publication highlighted that
the firm has "doubled its portfolio over the past four
years," praised its "excellent record of defence wins for
states facing hefty investment arbitrations," and reported
that the "firm's record in public international law
disputes is even more impressive."
In announcing the GAR 30 during Paris Arbitration Week, the
publication highlighted Foley Hoag's International Litigation
and Arbitration practice for achieving strong client results,
including:
- Defending Ghana in an SCC arbitration where the Tribunal declined to award any of the US$915 million the claimants were seeking in damages.
- Persuading the French Court of Cassation to reinstate a favorable investment treaty award that had rejected a US$4 billion claim against Uruguay.
- Assisting several States in the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea advisory proceedings that resulted in a landmark opinion on the obligations of States concerning climate change under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The publication also highlighted Foley Hoag's representation
of Armenia in various disputes with Azerbaijan arising from the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict; its significant Latin America profile,
including new cases for Honduras and Chile, as well as ongoing
representations of Peru and its State-owned entities; and other new
mandates for Portugal or Qatar.
The GAR 30 quotes several clients who praise the firm's
"very professional approach, case management and
creativity," and "diverse set of exceptionally qualified
lawyers who provide legal assistance in a culturally sensitive
manner." Clients also described partner Constantinos Salonidis
as a "leader with a team spirit with a deep knowledge of
practice" and a "strategy-maestro," while partner
Christina Hioureas is highlighted as an "excellent team
leader" who is "sharp and energetic."
Foley Hoag's International Litigation and Arbitration practice
consists of nearly 60 attorneys based in its Washington, D.C., New
York, Boston and Paris offices, and specializes in the
representation of sovereign States and State-owned enterprises in
disputes before international courts and arbitral tribunals. The
firm also boasts a leading international commercial arbitration
practice, advising clients in complex commercial disputes.
"This recognition highlights our continued commitment to
providing strategic, high-caliber advocacy for our clients in
complex international arbitration matters worldwide," said
Diana Paraguacuto-Mahéo, Global Co-Chair of Foley Hoag's
International Litigation & Arbitration Department, alongside
Hioureas and Salonidis. "We are honored to once again be
recognized on this esteemed list, which is a testament to the hard
work and dedication of our attorneys who specialize in this
area."
The GAR 30 ranks firms primarily on the number of arbitral hearings
conducted over a two-year period. Firms receive additional credit
for working on higher-value disputes, and for activities that
reflect a strong reputation, such as arbitrator appointments
received by firm members.
