Metra Oy, a listed Finnish industrial firm, acquired New Sulzer Diesel AG from the Italian firm Fincantieri S.p.A.. New Sulzer produces and develops diesel motors both for ships and for power plants and its last year turnover was around 570 million US dollars.

The acquisition makes Metra, or rather its subsidiary Wartsila Diesel to which the acquired units will be united, the world's leading manufacturer of diesel motors with a global market share of around 25 per cent. Wartsila's turnover will rise to around 2.5 billion US dollars.

Through the acquisition Wartsila will have the size that is required to do both sufficient research & development work and to have a global sales and service network. Further the acquisition will make Wartsila's entrance to the increasingly important far eastern markets easier.
