A False Rationale For Pricing Increasing May Be Misleading

On 21 February, the Federal Court accepted consent orders from Wesfarmers Kleenheat Gas concerning price increases. The company had represented to customers that increases were dictated by the Saudi Aramco Contact Price. In its press release, the Chairman of the ACCC noted that "suppliers cannot blame price changes on the Saudi CP if this is not the actual or only basis on which they are varying their LPG price, and the real reason for varying the price does not accord with what customers are being told". Wesfarmers Kleenheat was ordered to provide refunds to 186 affected customers, totalling nearly $800,000.
