Intellectual Property partner Dr. Beatriz San Martin was quoted in a recent World IP Review feature in celebration of International Women's Day. The 2021 International Women's Day campaign, #ChooseToChallenge, asks individuals to call out gender bias and inequality, celebrate women's achievements, and create an inclusive world.
In its feature, World IP Review asked leading women attorneys to discuss the campaign and its relationship to issues affecting women in IP. San Martin emphasized the continuing bias experienced by women attorneys that affects their career progression, and the responsibility of senior women attorneys in supporting the advancement of more junior women attorneys. To help bring about change, San Martin has mentored women associates formally and informally to support their career development and makes a point to recommend women peers for IP work.
"For me, this year's campaign theme means that everyone has a responsibility to challenge discrimination and bias," noted San Martin. "Staying silent is no longer acceptable as it only serves to support the old ways."
