Senior International Policy Advisor and former U.S. Ambassador Barbara Leaf was recently interviewed in the W Radio segment, "'Trump Administration Sending Confusing Signals': Barbara Leaf on the Search for a Gaza Deal," about negotiations on Gaza that appeared once again to be at an impasse.
Leaf explained that it remained unclear what subsequent steps the Israeli government would take in Gaza, where she noted the situation was "extraordinarily bad."
"The news out of Israel [...] is full of conflicting information as to what the Israeli government will do next in military terms and, for the moment, prospects on the hostage front seem very bleak indeed," Leaf said.
Leaf also highlighted the risk of conflict spreading into the surrounding region.
"There is a very loud chorus of voices in Israel now that asserts that there are no more military achievements to be gained in Gaza," Leaf said. "There is a risk that the conflict will simply end with Israel in an endless quagmire, which again, will undermine food security but also that of the wider region."
