On September 18, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that, effective September 10, 2024, it would automatically extend the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (Green Cards) to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who properly file a Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, to renew an expiring or expired Green Card.

Lawful permanent residents can present these receipt notices along with their expired Green Card in order to show their continued lawful status and employment authorization.

USCIS had previously provided a 24-month extension of the validity of a Green Card following proper filing of a Form I-90. The new language noting the 36-month extension has been updated on Form I-90 receipt notices printed on or after September 10, 2024. The Agency notes that the extension was provided with the aim of helping applicants who experience longer process times, so that they may receive proof of lawful permanent resident status throughout the period in which they are awaiting receipt of their new Green Card.
