CMS has released detailed Medicare inpatient hospital, outpatient hospital, and physician utilization and payment data for 2013, including data analysis such as spending breakdowns by specialty and region. The hospital data set includes average hospital charges, Medicare payment, and utilization statistics for the 100 most common Medicare inpatient diagnosis related groups (DRGs). CMS also released hospital-specific charges for 30 selected outpatient Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) groups. The physician data set includes Medicare Part B fee-for-service payment, submitted charges, and number of services furnished by physicians and other non-institutional health care providers (e.g., non-physician practitioners, ambulatory surgical centers, clinical laboratories, and ambulance providers). The data set excludes institutional health care providers and durable medical equipment suppliers.
