On 17 January 2021 Federal Law N 217-FZ On changes to part four of Civil Code of RF came into effect.

It stipulates that registration certificates are now issued in electronic form for Trade Mark certificates and patents (excluding secret inventions), utility model or industrial designs.

For the rightsholder's convenience the patents and registration certificates are now issued in electronic form by default. However, receipt of the certificate/patent in paper is still possible, but on a special request from the rightsholder. Electronic documents will be available for downloading at the Rospatent online database.

In addition, the changes to Russia's Civil Code provide the applicant with the ability to attach 3D models to an application for registration of IP objects in electronic form. Previously it was only possible to provide 2D models. These amendments will help to solve the problems of rights infringements, as 3D models provide a more detailed visualisation and disclosure of technical decision.
