Information Commissioner raises concerns over benefits crackdown

The Information Commissioner has requested a meeting with the Government over its plans to work with credit reference agencies to combat benefit fraud. Last week the Prime Minister David Cameron announced that he was seeking help from the agencies to carry out credit checks on people that apply for benefits. The credit reference agencies are likely to receive 'bounty' payments from the government for each fraudster that they identify. Christopher Graham, the Information Commissioner, wishes to discuss the proposals, which raise concerns about privacy and the misuse of personal data, with Welfare Reform Minister, Lord Freud.

Payment card industry announces changes to standards

The Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCISSC) has announced that changes are to be made to its Payment Card Industry Data and Payment Application Data Security Standards in October 2010. The modifications to the standards, which cover PIN security amongst other things, have been designed to harmonise both standards and facilitate stronger security practices. The updated standards will come into force on 1 January 2011.
