MIAMI (August 2026) - Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney continues to strategically expand its litigation section with the addition of Carlos B. Castillo as a shareholder in its Miami office. Castillo is a seasoned attorney with more than 30 years of experience as a general counsel, commercial litigator, and Assistant U.S. Attorney. He focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation, higher education, and government investigations. His clients span a wide range of industries, including higher education, financial services, telecommunications, healthcare, insurance, hospitality, and consumer products.
“Carlos adds significant strength to our bench for clients in our growing higher education practice and for clients across many other industries,” said Jennifer Olmedo-Rodriguez, litigation shareholder and head of the Miami office. “Carlos and his extensive experience, ranging from Assistant U.S. Attorney to in-house counsel, will enhance value for clients in Florida and across our national footprint.”
Prior to joining Buchanan, Castillo served as general counsel to Florida International University, a top 50-ranked public university, where he and his team oversaw all legal affairs, including significant litigation and investigations, across specialties such as athletics, employment, real estate, healthcare, research and grants, procurement, and student affairs. He helped protect the university’s reputation through multiple crises, including a highly publicized bridge collapse, an investigation and leadership transition involving a former president, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Previously, Castillo was a partner at a national law firm where he helped to open and manage the Florida office. He handled complex litigation and led key depositions, evidentiary hearings, trials, and settlements. Castillo served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Florida from 2002 to 2005. In his capacity as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, he also served as Special Counsel for Public Affairs. He actively prosecuted more than ten federal criminal trials, assisted with the prosecution of civil healthcare fraud cases, and the defense of civil claims against federal agencies.
“Buchanan offers an impressive platform in Florida and across its national footprint,” said Castillo. “The firm’s collaborative culture, dynamic multidisciplinary teams and commitment to client service attracted me to the firm. I look forward to continuing to grow my practice at Buchanan.&rdquo
