McCarthy Tétrault is proud to announce that Benchmark Litigation Canada has recognized our work on two important cases. Our colleagues Moya Graham, Kara Smyth KC and Jill Yates KC were honoured individually, as were our Class Actions and IP practice groups.
With seven wins, our Firm won more than any other this year.
Our Firm was recognized for its outstanding contributions to Métis National Council Secretariat Inc. v. Chartier. We served as lead counsel to former consultants of the Métis National Council Secretariat in litigation concerning whether they improperly benefited from former directors or officers breaching their duties. The indoor management rule was a complete defence for our clients. Shane C. D'Souza led a team that included Ljiljana Stanic, Alana Robert and Mathew Zaia.
We were also recognized for representing Egale Canada, Skipping Stone Scholarship Foundation and individual applicants in a challenge to Alberta's Bill 26. Egale Canada Human Rights Trust v. Alberta is precedent-setting litigation on a matter of significant public interest: the extent to which the government may constitutionally restrict access to gender-affirming healthcare for trans and other gender-diverse young people. The team is led by Adam Goldenberg, Ljiljana Stanic and Kara Smyth KC, with a national team including Branden Cave, Sean Smyth KC, Erica Baron, Dorothy Charach, Javid Dharas, Megan Pryor, Hannah Mirsky and Leah Strand.
Additionally, we were named Class Action Firm of the Year and IP Firm of the Year, while Moya Graham was named Construction Litigator of the Year, Kara Smyth KC was named Alberta Litigator of the Year, and Jill Yates KC was named Class Action Litigator of the Year.
Earlier this month, Benchmark identified Sarit Batner, Mason Poplaw and Shane D'Souza among Canada's Top 50 Trial Lawyers, for consistently delivering outstanding and innovative work and exceptional client service.
Benchmark released the 2026 edition of the Benchmark Litigation Canada directory and named 53 McCarthy Tétrault lawyers as Litigation Stars, and nine as Future Stars.
Benchmark Litigation ranks top litigation work across key industry sectors and compiles its rankings through an extensive research process, including interviews with both our peers and clients.
