Japan is currently experiencing a wave of battery energy storage system (BESS) project development, driven by a number of positive factors.

Japanese government support through the long term decarbonization auction (LTDA) has underpinned bankability for projects that have secured capacity in the auction rounds to date. The move from the feed in tariff to feed in premium system, requiring project owners to secure their own offtake arrangements, has also led to an increased focus on BESS systems to improve project returns. This has been aided by Japanese regulatory changes, facilitating co-location of BESS with solar projects. Growth of BESS projects in heavily curtailed areas of Japan such as Kyushu is also seen as a way to overcome grid constraints that have restricted renewable development to date in those areas.

Companies have announced over US$2.6 billion in planned BESS investment in Japan since December 2023. Rystad Energy, an independent energy research firm, forecasts Japan's battery storage capacity could reach about 4 gigawatts based on projects under construction, planned and awarded, which would require $6 billion in investment.

Join us in Tokyo and Singapore for a focused seminar where leading lawyers from our Japan and Singapore teams with deep experience in renewable energy will unpack the latest regulatory, structuring and financing developments in Japan's battery-storage sector.

Topics will include:

  1. Structuring BESS investment into Japan, key issues for foreign developers
  2. The Japanese LTDA support mechanism, auction rounds to date and current status
  3. BESS project approvals and grid-connection, process and key required permits
  4. Revenue markets for BESS in Japan
  5. The evolving BESS regulatory landscape, including recent amendments to the Electricity Business Act and the legal treatment of stand-alone storage assets
  6. Project bankability, best practices for Japanese BESS projects
  7. Future outlook – where to from here?

This seminar is designed for renewable-energy developers, financiers, project sponsors and advisors active or exploring opportunities in Japan's fast-growing battery-storage and renewables market.
