George Turner has joined Jones Day as a partner in its Investigations & White Collar Defense Practice. He is based in the Firm's New York Office.
Mr. Turner has 17 years of experience as a litigator working on a broad range of complex white-collar criminal and civil commercial matters, including the last 11 years within the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). He most recently served as the Associate Deputy Attorney General (ADAG) for National Security, the senior DOJ official responsible for national security-related matters in the Office of the Deputy Attorney General, where he had oversight responsibility for many of DOJ's most significant enforcement and policy matters. Prior to his appointment as ADAG, Mr. Turner spent more than nine years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, rising to the position of Chief of the National Security Unit and overseeing all aspects of the District's national security-related portfolio. Throughout his tenure in government service, Mr. Turner investigated and prosecuted hundreds of cases, conducted or supervised more than 20 jury trials (all resulting in convictions), and successfully argued several appeals in the Second Circuit.
"In today's global economy, virtually every cross-border transaction, investigation, and dispute has a national security component to it," said Lee DeJulius, Partner-in-Charge of Jones Day's New York Office. "With his impressive track record in government service, George has the ideal background and skills to help clients navigate this increasingly challenging environment."
At Jones Day, Mr. Turner joins a team of lawyers worldwide who have helped clients with many of the most significant U.S. and cross-border investigations and white-collar criminal defense matters in recent decades. He will work with a global team of experienced lawyers to defend companies and individuals against allegations relating to all areas of white-collar crime, including internal investigations and compliance reviews, federal and state investigations, enforcement actions and criminal prosecutions, and regulatory issues.
"George's experience at the highest levels of the Department of Justice, coupled with his deep knowledge of the inner workings of the U.S. national security apparatus, makes him a valuable addition for our practice and a tremendous resource for our clients," said Ted Chung, the leader of Jones Day's Investigations & White Collar Defense Practice. "His particular focus on national security enforcement, developed through years of experience handling many of the country's most important national security matters, will be especially important as we advise our clients on government inquiries, dispute-resolution strategies, and compliance initiatives. I am delighted to welcome George to Jones Day."
Mr. Turner earned his law degree from Harvard Law School and his undergraduate degree from Harvard College. Early in his legal career, he served as a law clerk to the Hon. Colleen McMahon in the Southern District of New York and as a law clerk to the Hon. Barrington Parker in the Second Circuit.
