A Strong Foundation
Benson’s legal career began after seven years at the University of Georgia, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 2002 and receiving his JD from the Law School in 2005.
Joining DEF
In 2004, Benson joined DEF as a summer associate, gaining valuable experience that laid the groundwork for his future at the firm. He transitioned to a full-time associate role in August 2005, where he began focusing on insurance defense litigation, cutting his teeth on workers’ compensation cases and working with his partner on major insurance coverage matters, with highlights including assisting in an appeal to the Supreme Court of Georgia and a 2+ week arson trial in federal court.
Rising Through the Ranks
Benson’s dedication and expertise led to his promotion to partner in January 2013. His contributions to the firm were further recognized when he became an equity partner in 2015, reflecting his integral role in DEF’s success. “I learned from the best,” he says, “working for Mike Bagley.”
Recognition and Contributions
Throughout his career, Benson has been acknowledged for his legal excellence, earning selections to Georgia Super Lawyers from 2020 to 2022 and receiving an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell. He has also co-authored the Mercer Law Review’s annual survey of Georgia Workers’ Compensation law since 2009 and contributed to the GWCA’s Workers’ Compensation Desk Manual.
