“As a high-level declaration of strategic intent, the SDR’s focus on the core roles of the armed forces and the strengthening of UK deterrents has provided the defence industry with much-needed positive mood music.
“While the Review was undoubtedly light on detail in several key areas – for example, around its frequent references to private finance – business leaders are likely to welcome its emphasis on radical procurement reform, faster innovation cycles, emerging technologies and the UK’s skills base.
“Implementing the approach laid out by the Review will, however, require significant cultural change across the MoD and industry, not to mention defence spending of at least 3% of GDP – and sooner rather than later. Unless the sector can adjust to tighter timelines, innovate faster, deliver better value for money, and source the necessary capabilities and financial investment, we’re just dealing with rhetoric.
“Those businesses that emerge from this disruption on the front foot will be those that strengthen their supply chain models to better enable themselves to ramp up production and that position themselves to deliver rapid innovation. Addressing skill shortages in cyber, digital, and AI will be crucial for both the defence industry and the MoD.”
