Motaher Chowdhury, Senior Legal Counsel and Head of the India Desk at Elias Neocleous & Co LLC, has welcomed the Bar Council of India’s (BCI) landmark decision to allow foreign lawyers and law firms to advise on foreign and international law in India under a newly structured regulatory framework.
Joining other leading Indian and international lawyers in supporting the reform, Chowdhury described the move as “forward-looking” and a potential catalyst for establishing India as a key hub for international commercial arbitration.
“This reform establishes a structured pathway for responsible cross-border legal collaboration,” said Chowdhury, noting that it reflects India’s growing prominence in the global legal and economic landscape. He emphasized that clients engaged in complex cross-border transactions will benefit significantly from the increased legal interoperability, while the initiative is also expected to enrich India’s legal ecosystem through greater international engagement.
Chowdhury also noted that there remain areas for further refinement, particularly with respect to registration protocols and the implementation of fly-in, fly-out provisions—to ensure procedural clarity and operational efficiency as the framework continues to evolve.
