Global law firm A&O Shearman has provided legal counsel to the senior lenders to Chappal Energies in its acquisition of 32-year-old upstream energy business Equinor Nigeria Energy Company from Equinor ASA.

The deal – which closed on 6 December – means that Chappal now owns a 20.21% interest in the Agbami field.

“This was a highly significant transaction – part of a wider move towards increased home-grown investment in Nigeria’s upstream energy sector as global players operating in the country have begun to shift to offshore and deepwater operations.”

Mitchell Ikoghode
Partner

The A&O team included Mitchell Ikoghode, senior associate Joba Akinola, associate James Lancaster and trainee Lea Andersen from the firm’s energy, natural resources and infrastructure practice. It was also supported by partner Oliver Bacon in the M&A team.
