Lewis Silkin’s leading Interactive Entertainment team have advised TIGA, the trade association representing the UK’s video games industry, on the review and update of the association’s Best Practice Principles Guide for games businesses.

TIGA and Lewis Silkin have together produced a concise guide to regulatory issues facing the video games sector. The guide, which you can download here, sets out a summary of some of the key regulatory risks, encompassing:

  • Data protection
  • Consumer law
  • Loot Boxes
  • Online Safety
  • Age Ratings

Lewis Silkin has also reviewed and updated TIGA’s Voluntary Principles for Safeguarding Players and Positive Practices, available to download here. The updated principles make changes to tie more closely to consumer law principles and refer to new legislation and regulatory change.

The Interactive Entertainment team at Lewis Silkin really are In the Game and continue to go from strength to strength following a series of significant hires, and growth in the north of England. The team has now developed into one of the largest and most respected UK practices.

Commenting on working with TIGA, Laura Harper said:

It has been an absolute pleasure supporting TIGA to update their principles. We were also pleased to be able to co-produce a short guide to regulatory issues affecting the sector, which we believe will be immensely helpful to those working in the sector. The current regulatory landscape for games companies has never been more complex or dynamic and the interplay between existing and new legislation including the EU Digital Services Act; UK Online Safety Act and GDPR & Children’s Code means that compliance can prove challenging. Our guide seeks to provide a useful summary to help businesses to navigate key legislation. We always enjoy working with TIGA and very much look forward to further opportunities to collaborate in the future.

Dr Richard Wilson, TIGA CEO, commented:

I’m very grateful to Lewis Silkin’s excellent Interactive Team for their support in updating our principles, as well as their input into our guide. Their deep knowledge of the issues affecting the sector, combined with their approachability and responsiveness made it a pleasure to work together.
