As AI technology continues to advance, it has increasingly been exploited for infringing activities that violate general personality rights protected under the Civil Code of the People’s Republic of China, including the right to name, right to image, and right to reputation.

China has issued the world's first national-level regulatory framework specifically targeting AI emotional companionship, virtual humans, and virtual companions. The Interim Measures on Management of Anthropomorphic Interactive Services of Artificial Intelligence establishes comprehensive rules for service providers, including prohibition boundaries, user intervention obligations, and special protections for vulnerable groups.

Regulators worldwide are grappling with how to address the alleged risks artificial intelligence ("AI")-powered chatbots and virtual companions pose, including for minors and the elderly.
