Fantastic to read about this project from Germany. This joint project is known as H2Agrar and project Green H2 Hub-Haren, and is taking place in the state of Lower Saxony. The involved parties are developing a hydrogen infrastructure in the Emsland model region, with green hydrogen generated using wind power, agri-PV and potentially from biogas plants and forest residual wood.

AGCO/Fendt is working on the project with CEC Haren GmbH & Co. KG, Röchling Engineering Plastics SE & Co. KG, Braunschweig Technical University and Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences.

On 27th February, at a hydrogen summit hosted by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, Fendt first showed their prototype hydrogen tractor. To be powered using fuel cells and locally generated hydrogen, these tractors could be part of the future of farming, with effectively zero emissions.

Alongside methane capture, for allowing methane emissions from farms to be dramatically reduced and converted instead into less harmful emissions, these non fossil fueled technologies will help us to achieve net zero.

Agriculture and forestry are of central importance for the energy transition. This applies to the production and use of energy on farms just as it does to agricultural machinery.
