Being a sci-fi fan the recent election of Donald Trump immediately called to mind the famous lines on topic written by Douglas Adams in 'A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Adams wrote 'It is a well known fact that people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. So to summarise the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.' How those words haunt me now. How reality suddenly imitates fiction.
What then I wondered is really involved in being the President of the USA. The educational resource website www.scholastic.co.uk provides a handy job description. I learned that there are seven roles and boy are they far ranging including 'boss to millions of civil servants, entertaining Japanese diplomats at the White House, writing letters to the Russian leaders and deciding whether and which countries to bomb. I mused on this role and its diversity and thought of my own role as President of Briffa and how very diverse that is also, being bossy, entertaining, crafting letters, deciding when to attack and when to seek reconciliation etc. What is it then that keeps all Presidents going in their role whether they are in politics or business and whether suited to the demands of the job or not. The answer I think is that whether you agree with their vision or not all Presidents clearly have one and are on a mission to see that vision though. Briffa's mission is to help businesses use their intellectual property to make their business a great success. The whole team here believes in the mission and that it is a mission for good. For that reason the mission is successful. Likewise President's Trump mission will need to be a mission that results in good things being done if it is to be viewed by history as a successful one.
