Campbells, in partnership with Deloitte (UK) and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP will host a panel entitled 'ABRAAJ: the biggest collapse in private equity history' at the 10th World Litigation Forum 2020 in Dubai on Monday 27 January.

The two-day conference is targeted at in-house counsel, law firm partners and other stakeholders in the legal industry who are interested in a multitude of dispute resolution discussions and developments in the Middle East and Asian regions, as well as globally.

Guy Manning, Partner and Head of Litigation, Insolvency & Restructuring at Campbells will be moderating the ABRAAJ panel. "The collapse of the Abraaj group, which was once the leading private equity firm operating in emerging markets with approximately US$14 billion of assets under management, has had a significant impact on the private equity market in the Middle East and emerging markets more generally," said Mr Manning. "The panel will provide a detailed overview of what is considered to be the largest insolvency of a private equity group and has a number of challenges and cross-border issues which will be of interest to the legal and private equity community."

All members of the panel have worked closely on the ABRAAJ matter since its collapse, offering different perspectives from one of the liquidators appointed (Deloitte), onshore counsel (Weil) and Cayman counsel (Campbells). They are:

  • David Soden, Partner at Deloitte LLP London, UK
  • Liam Faulkner, Partner at Campbells, Cayman Islands
  • Adam Plainer, Partner at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, UK
  • Christopher Marks, Associate at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, UK

This year's conference also focuses on litigation developments in the fields of corruption and bribery, alternative dispute resolution, data privacy and technology in litigation.
