Recognition Based on Peer Review
Best Lawyers recognition is notable because it is based entirely on peer review. Rather than relying on submissions that are evaluated by a judging panel or a paid ranking system, Best Lawyers’ process is designed to capture the collective opinion of leading lawyers about the professional abilities of their colleagues in the same geographic area and practice area.
The process begins with nominations. For the traditional Best Lawyers recognition, lawyers may be nominated by anyone, including themselves. Nominees are then placed on confidential peer-review ballots, where currently recognized lawyers evaluate the calibre of the candidates’ professional work. Best Lawyers then analyzes the peer feedback before conducting an eligibility check to confirm that candidates are in good standing with their local bar associations. Once the process is complete, the results are released and the recognized lawyers are published in Best Lawyers’ print and digital editions.
The Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch recognition follows the same Purely Peer Review® methodology and is intended to highlight lawyers earlier in their careers. Candidates are nominated, invited to participate in peer review, and evaluated before the results are finalized.
A Distinction Earned Through the Profession
For the 2027 Canadian edition, the research cycle began with nominations in February 2026, followed by peer voting from February through April. The results were released publicly on September 3, 2026, following an embargo period that gives firms and lawyers an opportunity to review the results before the public announcement.
The Best Lawyers methodology is intended to provide a measure of professional recognition that comes directly from members of the legal community. Recognized lawyers are also invited to participate in future peer-review cycles, helping to maintain an ongoing, peer-driven evaluation of legal talent.
The Lawyer of the Year designation is an additional distinction within the Best Lawyers program. Each year, only one lawyer in each practice area and designated metropolitan area receives the honour, based on the highest overall peer feedback.
