With a key tariff deadline fast approaching, negotiations between Canada and the United States continue as officials work to reach an agreement that could avert new duties on billions of dollars' worth of Canadian exports. The discussions come amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding sector-specific tariffs and broader Canada-U.S. trade relations.
Speaking recently with CBC News, Wendy Wagner, head of Gowling WLG's International Trade & Customs Group, said that continued discussions on the technical details of a potential agreement are an encouraging sign, while acknowledging that the prospect of new tariffs remains very real as the deadline approaches.
"I think it's good positive news that sources are saying technical details are being worked out. If there was no prospect or hope for a deal, I don't think the negotiations would be getting down to gritty details."
