Clare Brennan, Partner in our Corporate & Commercial team, spoke to City AM following the news that KPMG and Deloitte are offering UK staff bumper redundancy packages, slashing their headcount.
The sector relies on a steady level of staff attrition, typically with employees leaving voluntarily each year. However, a more challenging job market has resulted in fewer departures, prompting firms to take more proactive steps to reduce costs and reshape their workforces.
Clare explained that enhanced redundancy packages are often designed not only to compensate departing employees, but also to secure a legally binding agreement that prevents future employment claims, with the higher payment acting as the incentive for employees to accept the terms.
Enhanced redundancy terms paired with settlement agreements are increasingly being used as a means of driving exits while managing legal risk and avoiding lengthy disputes.
