As Canada, the United States and Mexico prepare for the upcoming review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), governments, businesses and industry stakeholders are closely watching what lies ahead for one of the world's most important trading relationships. With Canada and the U.S. sharing a deeply integrated economy and approximately $1.3 trillion in annual trade, the review presents an opportunity to reinforce the partnership and address evolving economic priorities on both sides of the border.

Speaking recently with guest host Mark Kelley on CBC/Radio-Canada's The Current, Jacques J.M. Shore, C.M., a partner at Gowling WLG and a leading adviser on international trade and government affairs, discussed the state of Canada-U.S. relations and the importance of maintaining a constructive dialogue as the review process unfolds. While acknowledging the challenges associated with the negotiations, Jacques emphasized the long-standing benefits of the bilateral relationship and Canada's role as a trusted partner to the United States.

"We're not talking about elbows up, but frankly willing to work arm and arm."

Throughout the discussion, Jacques highlighted Canada's strengths in areas such as critical minerals, agriculture, energy and integrated North American supply chains. He noted that Canada has the ability to demonstrate that it is a reliable partner and stressed the importance of showing, through diplomacy and engagement, how closely aligned Canadian and American interests remain. He also underscored the need to focus on practical solutions that support economic growth, competitiveness and prosperity on both sides of the border as the CUSMA review moves forward.
