Marshall Gerstein is pleased to announce that Partner Ryan Phelan has been named Secretary of the Intellectual Property Owners Association’s (IPO) Software Related Inventions Committee! Ryan has been a member of IPO for more than half a decade, and he also serves on the organization’s Software Medical Devices and AI & Other Emerging Technologies committees.

The Software Related Inventions Committee focuses on legal and policy issues affecting the protection of software‑based innovations, including patent eligibility, prosecution strategies, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. The group plays an active role in developing IPO publications and educational programming that shape best practices for IP owners and practitioners.

Ryan represents numerous startup and Fortune 500 clients with patent matters in technical areas and industries including artificial intelligence and machine learning, blockchain and cryptocurrency, medical devices, biometrics data and services, virtual reality, imaging, internet and e-commerce, computer networking, data storage and management, encryption and security, mobile telecommunications, consumer electronics, insurance and finance applications, mechanical devices, among others. Ryan regularly publishes thought leadership articles and speaks on IP law and modern technologies. He frequently writes on the subject of AI at Marshall Gerstein’s blog PatentNext at patentnext.com. Ryan also teaches at Northwestern University’s Pritzker School of Law, including coursework on Patenting Software Inventions in the United States.
