I attended yet another great AIRMIC conference in Liverpool this month. We spotted many familiar faces, best not to say old, and many new ones too. The venue was excellent and the event was well attended by insurers, brokers and service providers.

We are grateful to the attendees that dropped by the Guernsey Finance stand. From professionals who already use Guernsey for their captive or cell or the like, to those who wanted to know more about what Guernsey can offer. Some seemingly were only after one of our cows, donkeys or puffins! But pleasingly most ended up discovering that Guernsey might be able to offer them something after all.

We continued to share the story of Guernsey, highlighting the strengths of our insurance sector and its capacity to meet the evolving needs of clients. Specifically, we emphasised how Guernsey is a safe, stable and secure environment, alongside a proven track record of our insurance sector for finding innovative solutions for clients. Our supportive ecosystem, which includes a wide range of professionals such as lawyers and accountants, coupled with pragmatic and constructive regulators, adds significant value to our insurance sector.

This message resonated well with many of the underlying themes of the conference, including captive first strategies and using reinsurance for your captive effectively. It is clear that an increasing number of risk managers without a captive are looking at the possibility of establishing one.

It was a pleasure to engage with so many clients, whether their manager was amongst the Guernsey delegates or not. We received some very positive feedback on their experiences.

We enjoyed joining several Guernsey manager delegates, who enthusiastically engaged with visitors to our stand, with particular gusto if it was a client of another manager! On a more serious note, it is always valuable to receive feedback from clients on how we are doing and what issues people are encountering as clients’ entities, and the world, evolves.

Thank you also to John Rowson of Howden for presenting his Hub Session “Using reinsurance and ILS to grow and protect your captives’ business” and for Mike Johns of WTW for joining a panel session on “Risk Financing and Captives – building a captives first strategy”. Both of these received very positive feedback too.

From a personal perspective, I was pleased to meet a number of insurance fronters I had not met before. I hope we get the opportunity to meet them again when we hold our next Captive Roadshows in London in October this year. It was also great to see that our prize draw went to someone working for a very worthwhile charity, Plan International.

Whilst it was sad to say goodbye to Liverpool, we can look forward to AIRMIC’s next event on 22 and 23 September in Guernsey, the AIRMIC Guernsey Conference with Guernsey Finance. I am sure its success will surpass that of last year’s Guernsey Conference and cement further the special relationship between AIRMIC and the Guernsey insurance industry. See you there!
