It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend and longtime colleague, Don Chernichen, K.C., a longtime partner at BD&P.
With over 50 years at the Alberta Bar, Don’s influence ran deep — not only through his work in litigation, insurance, franchise and construction law, but in the wisdom, mentorship and generosity he shared with generations of BD&P lawyers. A proud protégé of BD&P's named partner James Palmer, Don carried forward a tradition of legal excellence and community leadership that became central to our firm’s culture.
"Don was my principal and I was his articling student. It was 30 years ago but it seems like yesterday. When I think back to those years, I know that I am the lawyer I am today because of Don's early mentoring and encouragement, as well as his generous support throughout my career. I am so glad I had the opportunity to tell him that recently over lunch. It was important to Don that he made a difference in people's lives. Don built and led a successful insurance defence practice that attracted numerous lawyers from other firms to BD&P and gave many junior lawyers valuable early court experience. He later turned his focus to construction law, playing a foundational role in shaping BD&P’s current construction law practice. As a founding fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers, and later as an Emeritus Fellow, he helped build BD&P’s reputation as a leader in the field. He was also a Barrister of the Order of Maximus with the Construction Lawyers Society of Canada, reflecting national recognition of his contributions.
Throughout his career, Don remained dedicated to guiding and supporting younger lawyers. He was known for his early-morning meetings, his generous approach to mentorship, and his sincere investment in helping others grow.
For many, Don’s mentorship extended beyond work — he created a sense of belonging, especially for those early in their careers.
"Don found out I was a Detroit Red Wings fan shortly after I started as a summer student 25 years ago, and from that point on he was a mentor and good friend. He brought me in on meaningful files that allowed me to get invaluable experience and was always generous with his time and advice. I was incredibly fortunate to have someone of his stature to learn from and look out for me. I’ll never forget when he insisted I join his family for Easter dinner when I was a young articling student, and he found out I had no plans — just one of many examples of his kindness. "I began my career over 30 years ago working with Don on a case that shaped my path. He was a tough taskmaster, but taught me the value of discipline, hard work, and teamwork. He had that rare ability to drive you crazy and earn your loyalty all at once. Our six-month trial together was the highlight of my career, and the bond we formed lasted a lifetime. He was an exceptional mentor, always willing and available to talk a problem through (although that almost always led to more work!) and a great friend. I will miss him tremendously." "This is a tough one. Don has been my closest friend at the firm since he recruited me to play for the BD&P hockey team in 1981 (a huge misjudgment on his part!). He was loyal to a fault and would never hesitate to tap into his Calgary network to find you the right doctor, realtor, car dealer, golf pro — whatever you needed. Still stunned he’s gone. Don’s impact was both professional and deeply personal. His care extended beyond the office and into the lives of those he worked with.

He was tremendously supportive of my professional journey, always taking time for check-ins to see how he could support me, whether through referrals, marketing strategies, or leaving me articles from magazines and newspapers. He always took the time to ask about my family, truly caring about my personal well-being. I am incredibly thankful for his guidance, generosity and kindness. Don’s legacy endures — in the careers he shaped, the high standards he upheld, and the culture of mentorship and care he helped build. He will be remembered with great respect, lasting affection and deep gratitude.
