This national holiday commemorates three historical events,
arguably the most significant is the end of the Great Siege in
1565. This day also coincides with the commemoration of the Virgin
Mary's birth, a feast which is celebrated in the villages of
Senglea, Naxxar, and Mellieħa in Malta, as well as in
Xagħra, Gozo.
