Forced marriages and domestic violence have always been social issues that have been marginalized in Hong Kong. They have come to light more prominently in recent months, as we have seen news and legal judgments details about girls and women being coerced and trafficked into forced marriages, commonly by their own families. Being in a relationship does not always equate to being secure or protected.
In this session, Patricia Ho, founder of Hong Kong Dignity Institute and Principal Lecturer in HKU Law Faculty, Evelyn Tsao, public interest lawyer and partner of Patricia Ho & Associates, and Anisha Ramanathan, senior associate of Withers Hong Kong family team will discuss the current situation concerning forced marriages and domestic violence in Hong Kong, They will also share practical tips in terms of protecting one's rights and safety; the domestic and cohabitation relationships violence ordinance; and organizations and professionals they can reach out to for help, protection and remedy.
