The Maltese government has invested in a €2 million property in Shanghai with possible plans of establishing a Maltese consulate here. This government's move is set to further strengthen Malta's ties with Asia. Minister for foreign affairs George Vella had already expressed this intention back in 2014 and this would be Malta's second presence in China's largest city.

At this point, it comes as no news that Malta is increasingly seeking to strengthen its ties with the East. Malta has recognised the potential of investing in its Maltese-Asian relationship in its various initiatives to further the island's economic growth, trade and foreign investment.

In link with this latest move, Malta was recently confirmed, along with numerous other prominent European investors, as one of the founding members of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. This initiative sets out to undertake several development projects across various sectors that are crucial for Asian economic growth, economic and social development and trade.
